How it started

From humble origins as a local effort in Portsmouth, NH, Help!ComeHome! began with a group of individuals who saw people struggling.

These early “volunteers” responded to the needs around them with their own two hands and money from their own pockets, pooling resources together to ensure that friends and neighbors could afford groceries, pay their bills, and keep up with home and car repairs. Some dedicated volunteers even opened the doors of their own homes to individuals who needed food and shelter after losing a job or getting behind on bills.

Gradually, as our impact expanded into nearby towns and neighboring states, our work became a nationwide effort to help Americans in need across the country. Our founder, Alison “Ellie” Mayo, established Help!ComeHome! and secured its nonprofit status in 2007, recognizing from firsthand experience in her own travels that the needs were much more serious than what news reports showed at the time, especially as the US economic recession began to climax.

Since then, middle and lower class Americans have only continued to seriously struggle with their finances.  Small and large businesses have failed throughout the country, leaving employees without resources to cover the cost of healthcare, pay for basic utilities, or provide food for their families.  The disparity between rich and poor only continues to increase, and rates of homelessness are higher than ever.

Our Mission

While millions of dollars continue to leave our shores for various enterprises every hour (yes, every hour), here on US soil lies a neglected and invisible third world country growing bigger every minute of every day. Help!ComeHome! reaches out to these disadvantaged individuals and communities on a daily basis, providing help however possible where other resources have failed.

Whether in the form of monetary assistance, food basket donations, clean water, human labor, disaster relief, or moral support, Help!ComeHome! volunteers provide crucial stepping stones for Americans and Native Americans to reach their goals and fulfill their dreams.

Our Work Abroad

As word about what we do continues to spread, HCH has been invited to serve communities abroad, and our work has expanded to cross borders and oceans. Our core volunteers serve their neighbors whoever God carries them, whether it be across the street or thousands of miles away. As true Minutemen for the Cause of the Christ, these special people stand by at the ready, knowing that at a moment’s notice, they may be called to joyfully lay down their life to help a neighbor in need.
